National Geographic (an awesome outfit still) just ran a great article titled "
Future Humans”, all-about the future of evolution and the possibilities as to how it will go from here. It’s a good and interesting read, and I’d recommend it… I’d also like throw-in another possibility, or perhaps just expand upon the possibilities they present… With all-rage these days is finding new ways to make human-beings responsible for nature's actions, I’m throwing my hat into the pseudo-science revolution by saying bluntly that human-beings have themselves already stifled the evolution of humanity (and just about everything else)…
Evolution is mutation, random mutation, and those mutations will on occasion be beneficial to the environment at-hand...This is why isolated species end-up being so unique, because a mutation creates a benefit that allows the carriers of that mutation an advantage in the particular circumstances of an ecosystem. They become more successful in that setting, and are hence preferable mates; causing the mutation to spread onto the population by virtue of everyone wanting to hump the cool guy / girl...
Without the mutations that eventually led man to the opposable thumb, that fluke...that mutation...that freak of nature...
that horrible deformity... man’s early brethren would likely have not progressed as it did, and the world today would be much different…
It's a problem (and yes, I’m calling it a ‘problem’ because I’m a Darwinist), because of man's intercession into this system. I think that system of progress is the sensible one, and the one that Christians pretty much based capitalism on really… Long-term survival of those who could survive best… Adapt…
Don’t get me wrong, I’m no Columbine-Type, and I’m no Eugenicist; quite the contrary actually, as
they are the problem as I see it…They (the Sanger-Types) think they should intervene in evolution, they think they are good enough to extrapolate that the “filth” should be bred out of humanity… Whereas what I am saying is the ‘filth’ *is* the future of humanity…
I’ll avoid the tired manifestations of cleaning-up the gene pool that NAZI’s conducted, or that The Spanish pulled centuries ago, they are abrasive, and I’ve no need to go there, because I have the issue of abortion right here in-front of me all day, like it or not…
Though I still consider myself “pro-choice” for the simple reason that too many people would be murderers otherwise (ugly pragmatism at work) abortion is really the perfect collection of methods, legislation, and belief for stifling human evolution, because it assumes the role of ‘social cleanser’ (as Sanger herself often touted with vigor). Poor Sanger though and poorer western society because to extinguish the “bad blood”
means to assume that you know what it is… And we don’t…We just know what we are told to like...
Fifty million babies have been aborted since abortion was legalized, of course it happened before that in much smaller quantities, but upon institutionalized choice the scale went through the roof… That population is exponentially larger than the populations of pre-human from which the opposable thumb or the erect spine developed. Indeed in that population it is almost without needing saying that mutations were stopped…
In addition to that you have the myriad technologies used in pre-screening pregnancies. This allows a parent to know early into development if a baby has an undesirable circumstance about them. I’ve yet to see the parent that is thrilled by the baby with fused vertebrae, or fewer fingers than others, or more fingers, or ‘deformed’ ears… Parents like this, who see their kid’s future as bleak, who fear the rejection of the kid by society, coupled with cheap, clean, and legal methods to abort the development of that child, have , and continue to snuff-out children with traits that are anything but status quo for the human-being.
By weeding out mutation before birth, humans have achieved a level of intercession in evolution. They have stopped the cycle, shut down the system of development that has been occurring from the division of the first cell of life. Charles Darwin’s discoveries were a monumental step for the human-being. We knew so much more now, and could explain so much more; it propelled humans into a category of species of certainly precious few around the universe. Darwin did us a favor, and deserves credit for it, however had he known how it would be used; I can’t help but wonder if he’d have gone to his grave along with his rivals in the arena without letting the world know about it…
In our attempts to create perfection we have seen the real shame of human-beings: stagnation… We have controlled evolution; survival of only those things that we like for our own social reasons… We also see the hypocrisy of those who carry the banner of enlightenment. They embrace Darwin’s findings as their bible, yet march ever faster towards extinguishing that system’s means with a zeal, not just for people, but all creatures that they can.
Yet the true carriers of the flag of life are, perhaps unwittingly, the actual Darwinists. They created a system in which competition creates the best outcome. They (the Judeo-Christians) have deemed life so worthy in all forms that they not only allow the misfits to be born with all of the rights endowed by a force higher than any of them, but often nurture them more so than the rest… Sarah Palin comes-to-mind quite easily…
So that’s it, the sad story of how we have stalled our own progress as natural creatures, creatures pissing on the very process that created us… And that is the sad tale of Margaret Sanger: The woman and cult of belief that threw Charles Darwin under the bus while cheering his life’s work eagerly…
PS: I just type this stuff as it comes out my head...or I'll just never post it... so forgive typos, I correct as I go....if you wanted a pro, you wouldn't be reading my stuff... =D
